Short nails can look elegant without extensions. Start by filing the free edge into a simple round or squoval shape. Wash and dry your hands, then gently clean around the nails. Avoid aggressive buffing because excessive filing can thin the nail plate. Apply a little cuticle oil or hand cream and gently push back only loose cuticle tissue if needed. For color, sheer pinks, neutral beige, soft peach, and classic red can all look polished on short nails. Two thin coats usually look smoother than one thick coat. Keep polish off the surrounding skin and add a top coat if desired. A neat shape, moisturized skin, and clean application often make a short manicure look more finished than complicated nail art.
